Chelford Cricket Club

The Roundabouts

1st XI v The Groves

Table topping Chelford, looking for a fourth consecutive, win faced The Groves at Peover Lane.  The Groves won the toss and taking the initiative opted to bat first.  Chelfords opening attack of M.Shallcross and D.Fenn have bowled well all season but The Groves batsmen batted steadily taking the score to 32 before Shallcross bowled M.Flannaghan for 13.

This opened the floodgates and 32-1 soon became 48-4, the other opener M.Cauldfield out for a solid 29.  Both Chelfords openers had 2 wickets each and the bit between their teeth so to speak, M.Evans looked to rebuild the innings with the help of D.Green but a superb caught and bowled by Z.Khan removed Green with the score on 85-5.

The introduction of K.Bhardwa accounted for Evans 28 and with the score now 93-6 Chelford saw an opening, A.Tidman and N.Brimble saw it differently each scoring 17 taking The Groves to 145-9 from 45 overs. Khan was the pick of the bowlers with 4-48 taking his tally to 42, Shallcross was miserly as usual taking 2-25 from 14 overs and both Fenn and Bhardwa bowled well picking up 2-28 and 1-30 respectively.

Chelfords reply started with a maiden from D.Walters but then openers C.Fenn and M.Dickenson set about the bowling. The pair added 33 in 35 balls before Fenn was caught behind for 22. Enter N.Srivastava who following a sublime 91 against Wirral last week signalled his intentions immediately by nonchalantly clipping his first ball over mid-wicket for 6. What followed can only be described as absolute carnage Srivastava went to 50 with his fifth 6 in only 30 minutes off just 25 balls.

The carnage continued Dickenson passing the strike to Srivastava and watching the fireworks from the other end. Srivastava’s ninth 6 took Chelford to 149-1 and 25 points for the win . Dickenson finished 26 n.o. part of an unbroken stand of 116 from 69 balls. But the day belonged to Srivastava whose innings was a class above anything I’ve seen moving seamlessly from immaculate timing and placement to raw power destroying each bowler with equal disdain, finishing with a fantastic 99n.o. from only 43 balls including nine 6’s and seven 4’s taking just 45 minutes  sheer brilliance .

Next week Chelford clash with local rivals Over Peover at Wellbank Lane.
